seems to be going through a rough patch at the mo. im dropping the engine out in a week or so to swap the box over but the last few days ive noticed it idling high and rich and it puffs a cloud of grey smoke out, but only off boost, and only when its warmed up. mainly as you come to a stop at a junction and not when youve been boosting beforehand either. on boost it pulls fine at 1.2 bar. pcv is working fine. im thinknig afm or maybe coolant temp sensor.
im hoping its not too expensive, anyone got any ideas? |

Crankcase blow-by?
Worn turbo seals / journal bearing? Might as well take a look at the plugs and see if there is one problem cylinder. I'm hoping that it's just some oil that has got into your inlet pipework and is burning off. |

me too. i have a roller bearing turbo so i can do without having to replace that. ill have a good look this weekend and see if i can gather any clues. its looking like maybe worn exhaust valve seals?? the fact it does it after youve slowed right down kinda points to this i think.my heads been a bit shimmy sounding for a while so if it is that i might just get another one and chuck it on. i really hope its not rings

No check for play in the shaft on the turbo
Both IN/OUT and UP/Downwards
1) If the shaft has excessive play then it will be the turbooo that needs replacing
if it feels ok,,,,
2) then take the spark plugs out
insert the compression tester and take down the readings over all 4 cylinders
if they all read the same then all is goood
if they read different then your fooookeeedd and may need a rebuild

ok ive had a look at the turbo, theres probably 3 to 4 mm of in/out play and a tiny amount of lateral too, just so you can feel some. theres a shitload of oil in the inlet pipe too and seems to be a bit around the catch can and some in the top breather pipe that goes down into the intake. can this breather pipe be vented to a filter to atmosphere instead of back in? though that wouldnt solve the problem of why theres a load of oil coming down it.

Probley either the piston ringland's or turbo bearings/seals gone, comp test may not identify the ringlands tho. So you need to have a leak down test done. what do the spark plugs look like? as they will tell you a great deal about the engine condition, usually oil burn's with a blue smoke btw, are you sure it's grey as that can be overfueling which could be something else, post up some good picture's of the spark plug's please
